Remote Ontology Business Consultant (Ontologist / Knowledge Graph Consultant)
Contract: 6 Months
Pay Rate: $60 per hour
We are seeking an experienced Ontology Business Consultant to support the design and implementation of enterprise semantic data models and knowledge graphs for a large-scale data initiative. This is a 6-month contract opportunity paying $60 per hour, working closely with business stakeholders, data architects, and engineering teams to translate complex business concepts into structured ontologies that power intelligent data systems.
Tech Stack: RDF, OWL, SHACL, SPARQL, Protégé, Stardog / GraphDB / Blazegraph / Neptune, SKOS taxonomies
Why This Role Matters
This project supports a major enterprise data modernization initiative focused on building a knowledge graph that connects previously siloed data across multiple business domains.
The ontology developed in this role will power advanced search, intelligent data integration, and AI-driven insights, helping the organization unlock the full value of its data ecosystem.
What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-Day
- Designing domain ontologies that define entities, relationships, and business concepts.
- Translating business requirements into semantic data models and RDF/OWL ontologies.
- Collaborating with data engineers to map structured and unstructured data into a knowledge graph architecture.
- Writing SPARQL queries to test, validate, and analyze semantic data models.
- Using Protégé and SHACL to design ontologies and define constraints.
- Developing and managing taxonomies and controlled vocabularies using SKOS.
- Supporting knowledge graph implementation within platforms such as Stardog, GraphDB, Blazegraph, or AWS Neptune.
- Documenting semantic models and establishing best practices for ontology governance and reuse.
- Working with business stakeholders to ensure semantic models accurately represent domain knowledge.
Required Qualifications
- Experience designing enterprise ontologies and semantic data models.
- Strong understanding of RDF, OWL, and SPARQL.
- Experience working with knowledge graph databases (Stardog, GraphDB, Blazegraph, Neptune, or similar).
- Experience with ontology modeling tools such as Protégé.
- Familiarity with taxonomy development and semantic standards such as SKOS and SHACL.
- Ability to translate business requirements into semantic data models.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing enterprise knowledge graph architectures.
- Background in data architecture, semantic integration, or metadata management.
- Experience supporting AI/ML or advanced analytics initiatives using semantic data models.
